Freddy Fender was an American Tejano, country and rock and roll musician, known for his work as a solo artist and in the groups Los Super Seven and the Texas Tornados. He is best known for his 1975 hits Before the Next Teardrop Falls and the subsequent remake of his own song Wasted Days and Wasted Nights.
While notable for his genre-crossing appeal, several of Fender’s hits featured verses or choruses in Spanish. Bilingual songs rarely hit the pop charts, often perceived as novelty hits, but Fender developed a track record of bi-lingual hits, expanding the rich culture of Tex-Mex (Texan-Mexican) music.
During the course of his career, Fender achieved five top-10 albums (his 1974 debut album Before the Next Teardrop Falls being certified Gold) and eight top-10 singles, two of those being certified Gold (Before The Next Teardrop Falls and Wasted Days and Wasted Nights). Fender also received three Grammy awards for “Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album” (1990) for the Texas Tornados, “Best Mexican/American Performance” (1999) for Los Super Seven and “Best Latin Pop” (2002) for La Musica de Baldemar Huerta.
