John McLaughlin – My Goal’s Beyond

Since My Goal’s Beyond was released in 1971, its reputation has continued to grow and it has come to be regarded as a modern classic. Newly repackaged classic reissue for a CD that has been absent from the stores or hardly available for quite some time. Featured Artists include: Billy Cobham, Dave Liebman, Badal Roy, Charlie Haden, Airto Moreira, Jerry Goodman. McLaughlin is an English jazz fusion guitarist and composer. He played with Tony Williams’s group Lifetime and then with Miles Davis on his landmark electric jazz-fusion albums In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew and Jack Johnson.

His 1970s electric band, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, performed a technically virtuosic and complex style of music that fused eclectic jazz and rock with eastern and Indian influences. His guitar playing includes a range of styles and genres, including jazz, Indian classical music, fusion, and Western classical music and has influenced many other guitarists. My Goal’s Beyond sees McLaughlin switching over to an unamplified acoustic instrument with a heady mix of jazz and Indian classical music with Peace One and Peace Two.

Walter Kolosky / www.allaboutjazz.com

“Throughout, McLaughlin’s acoustic lines faultlessly straddle the line between the subcontinent and jazz, and the ethereal results still hold up beautifully today”
