Buddy Rich – No Funny Hats

  • Recorded on 3 March 1978 at a high school in Sacramento, California with no producers, no engineers, just Buddy at his best, calling the tunes he wanted to play, recording the band the way he wanted

  • The Killer Force Band was one of Buddy’s favourites, so named because every night as they took the stage, they looked at each other, fists up in the air, and in unison yelled “KILL!”

  • On this particular night, there was no set list, no preconceived notion of what the show would be, resulting in pure, unadulterated spontaneity, which Buddy takes in his stride

  • No Funny Hats was in reference to something Buddy once said in an interview. When asked what Buddy thought of today’s music scene, he replied: “Jazz is an American classic, and therefore we present it as such, without tricks and without nonsense and without funny hats and funny hair.”

FEATURED MUSICIANS:
Buddy Rich – drums/leader
Steve Marcus – lead tenor sax
Andy Fusco – lead alto sax
Bob Kay – piano

Rich is most famous for his drumming technique, where he takes his speed, dexterity and smooth execution to new heights, as well as mastering the one-handed roll on both hands. During his lifetime he performed alongside Frank Sinatra, Les Brown, Charlie Ventura, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Carter and Harry James, in addition to leading his own band and releasing over fifty albums.

Especially notable were Rich’s sessions for the late-career comeback recordings of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, on which he worked with pianist Oscar Peterson and his famous trio featuring bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis. He also played Jazz at the Philharmonic, the title of a series of jazz concerts, tours and recordings produced by Norman Granz.
