A Never-Before-Released Collection of Trio Performances by the Jazz Legend Drops September 1st on Wienerworld

Wienerworld is proud to announce the release of “Trios”, a one-of-a-kind collection of rare, intimate recordings from jazz drumming icon Buddy Rich. Available September 1st on double translucent orange vinyl, compact disc, and all major streaming platforms, Trios captures the magic of Buddy Rich’s legendary three-man jam sessions—performances that have never been officially released until now.

Recorded live during international concerts in 1976 and 1977, Trios showcases Rich alongside extraordinary talents: bassists Jon Burr and Tom Warrington, and young piano prodigy Barry Kiener. These trio interludes—recorded by Rich’s alto saxophonist Alan Gauvin—feature Rich playing with brushes in an intimate setting, spotlighting his dynamic range and nuance.

“These trio sets were often played to give the brass section a break,” says Gauvin. “But what Buddy did with those moments was extraordinary. It was a masterclass in restraint, creativity, and musical interplay.”

Among the album’s ten tracks are beautifully reimagined standards such as “Just Friends,” “Stella by Starlight,” and “My Romance.” Each performance highlights Rich’s desire to step back and allow the piano and bass to shine—something unheard of for a drummer of his stature.

The release also serves as a tribute to Barry Kiener, the immensely gifted pianist who tragically passed away at 30. “Barry had been like a son to him,” remembers Buddy’s daughter Cathy Rich, who serves as an Executive Producer. “This album is a rare glimpse into Barry’s brilliance and the deep musical bond he shared with my father.”

Trios was recorded and produced by Alan Gauvin, mastered by Tom Swift, with cover art by Michael Patterson, the award-winning visual artist and USC professor known for his work on a-ha’s iconic “Take on Me” video.

Down Home Blues – Chicago: The Beautiful Stuff is the latest blue vinyl release of Chicago post-war Down Home Blues music from Wienerworld

The Beautiful Stuff highlights 15 artists who recorded definitive tracks of blues recorded in Chicago from 1941 through to 1961 and who were almost all prevalent in the Chicago blues scene during its golden age.

It includes a seminal recording from Jimmy Rogers plus early down home blues classic recordings from Muddy Waters, Elmore James, J.B. Lenoir and Little Johnny Jones as well as later tracks of established pre-war artist Robert Lockwood Jr. Also included are rare blues sides by Blue Smitty and female pianist Mata Roy.

The concept idea for this vinyl album release follows on from the critical acclaim of Wienerworld’s three box sets of Chicago blues released over the past seven years, given even more credence by the award of the Best Historical Post-War Blues Compilation release of 2023 by Living Blues magazine for the third Chicago box series, the ‘Special Stuff’ and with high critical praise from RNR, MOJO, Blues & Rhythm, DownBeat, Record Collector and Shindig.

Aimed at existing blues fans and those music fans and vinyl collectors wanting to find out more about post war Chicago blues. The Beautiful Stuff is pressed on blue vinyl and is housed in a 1960’s style album sleeve with a stunning period photo. It includes an outstanding 4000 word, 4 page detailed insert with period pictures and graphics by renowned blues historian Chris Bentley detailing each performer’s origins and their impact on the wider music scene, as well as full sessionography and discography detailing the where, when and who of the recordings, expertly compiled by blues music authority and author Mike Rowe.

This vinyl album is dedicated to the memory of the much-loved and missed Peter Moody, who created the Down Home Blues series together with Wienerworld.

A wonderful opportunity to discover the very cream of Chicago Blues – The Beautiful Stuff.

M.C. Records is proud to announce the release of Guy Davis’ The Legend of Sugarbelly on August 23. The 13-song release by the Grammy-nominated legendary roots musician contains mostly original songs and several blues classics from Leadbelly, Rev. Gary Davis, and Blind Lemon Jefferson.

On The Legend of Sugarbelly, Guy’s gift for storytelling is on full display as he weaves tales of lost love, moonshiners, and redemption.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet’s Live from the Northwest, 1959 was recorded by trailblazing and iconic audio engineer, Wally Heider. The sound is stellar!

“The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Live from the Northwest, 1959” is the newest release from Brubeck Editions, the Brubeck family-run label that only puts out music of the highest musical and technical quality. These exciting performances were recorded by the trailblazing and iconic audio engineer, Wally Heider, who pioneered the art of remote recording from his “studio on wheels.”

The sound he achieved is stellar, and this is perhaps the best live recording you can hear of one the most popular jazz groups of all time. The tapes were recorded in April, 1959 at the Multnomah Jazz Club and Clark College, both in the Portland, Oregon area.

On this recording you can hear the Quartet’s mastery of spontaneous counterpoint improvisation. Four months later, the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s focus shifted to polytonal and polyrhythmic approaches when the group recorded the legendary “Time Out”, and changed the course of jazz forever.

Never released performances from the legendary blues guitarist solo at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles in 1966 and 1970, and with a band in 1971

Samuel John Hopkins was born in 1912 to a poor sharecropping family in Centerville, Texas. He immersed himself in the blues at an early age, having met Blind Lemon Jefferson at a church picnic not long after having struck out on his own.

In 1946, Hopkins was “discovered” by Aladdin Records’ talent scout Lola Anne Cullum, who convinced him to travel to Los Angeles from Houston. There, he cut sides both as a solo artist and as part of a duo with pianist Wilson Smith. It was during his stint at Aladdin that he acquired his nickname, while his partner was dubbed “Thunder.”

Shortly thereafter, Hopkins returned to Houston, his home base for the balance of his life. He was a world-class song improviser and performer, but it was as a guitarist that Hopkins had the most impact. Jimmie Vaughan once said that without Hopkins, there would be no Jimi Hendrix, and in fact Hendrix’s record collection boasted more Hopkins LPs than any artist other than Bob Dylan.

The legendary blues guitarist performed at Los Angeles’ famed Ash Grove venue on many occasions over the club’s decade-and-a-half existence. Ten of the songs on this set are compiled from two separate performances at the club, and none of the performances on the album have previously been available commercially.

Tracks 1-14 consists of acoustic tracks with song introductions from a set recorded on November 29, 1970. Tracks 15-16 are acoustic performances from September 22, 1965. The disc is rounded out with four electric tracks with his band from Palo Alto’s In Your Ear club recorded on August 18, 1971. While most of the tunes are originals, the set lists include some distinctive cover versions of the R&B classics “What I’d Say” and “Hi-Heel Sneakers,” along with some folk/gospel nuggets, “Don’t The Moon Look Pretty” and “How Long Has It Been.”
